Curtis Salgado Headlines Our Biggest Boise Blues Festival Sunday July 16

FULL LINEUP ANNOUNCED FOR SILVER ANNIVERSARY:
SUNDAY, JULY 16, REID MERRILL PARK, EAGLE.

This year’s Festival has a definite reunion theme, as we celebrate our 25th year of bringing the blues to Boise. Boise Blues Society was founded in 1992, the first “summer picnic” came during the first year, and the organization has been around playing and presenting the blues in Treasure Valley ever since. In 2015 the summer picnic became the Boise Blues Festival.

Sponsored in part by Riverside Hotel, Boise. The festival is still carrying on its tradition of raising funds for The Idaho Foodbank. A portion of the ticket proceeds go to the Foodbank which also provides volunteers to help out at the festival. Other partners include Jo’s Traveling Bar and Radio Boise.

Our 25th Anniversary Year Festival

This year’s Festival has a definite reunion theme, as we celebrate our 25th year of bringing the blues to Boise. Boise Blues Society was founded in 1992, the first “summer picnic” came during the first year, and the organization has been around playing and presenting the blues in Treasure Valley ever since. In 2015 the summer picnic became the Boise Blues Festival.

Our 2017 festival includes the return of 3 of our most crowd-pleasing touring musicians of recent years, 2 of Boise’s most popular local blues bands, and an 85-year-old Mississippi blues icon who’s been playing and singing the blues for more than 70 years. You can’t get much more blues history than that!

THE ARTISTS:

Modern day blues icon CURTIS SALGADO, the man who inspired the original Blues Brothers, returns to Boise after his sold-out show in June 2016. This award-winning vocalist/harmonicist/songwriter sings and plays with soulful authority, never giving less than 100 percent. With a career spanning forty years, Salgado is a one-of-a-kind talent whose music is as compelling as his story. From co-fronting The Robert Cray Band to leading his own band (and recording nine solo albums) to helping transform John Belushi into “Joliet” Jake Blues to touring the country with Santana, he is a true musical giant. Salgado is once again nominated for several blues awards this year, including soul-blues artist of the year, album of the year and song of the year, all by The Blues Foundation.

The LISA MANN BAND sold out the Sapphire Room in 2015 for one

LISA MANN

of our most well-received shows ever, and returned to Treasure Valley for last summer’s Blues & Bones event. Lisa is a multi-award winning bass player and powerful vocalist who always brings down the house! Many of our fans have been asking to see her again, so we’re bringing her and her Really Good Band (that’s what they’re called) back for the Festival.

JOHNNY RAWLS also had a sold out audience jumping all during his 2 show at the Playhouse in March of 2016-2017, so we’ve asked him to be part of the reunion Festival, too. He’s backed up again by Boise’s popular ensemble SMOOTH AVENUE, fronted by JT, who

JOHNNY RAWLS

continually sell out their own shows throughout the Valley. Rawls, who is nominated for many blues awards year after year, is considered one of the finest soul-blues entertainers in the world.

Another mega-popular Boise band, THE BLUES ADDICTS, will open the Festival, joined by their frequent guests THE BRASS TACKS horn section. The Blues Addicts with Brass Tacks headlined this year’s BBS Fat Tuesday event in February, and we’re thrilled to have them return to the Festival. A talented blues-rock and new blues outfit, this band always has its legion of fans dancing throughout the show to classic tracks.

LEO “BUD” WELCH

LEO “BUD” WELCH began playing blues guitar in 1945 at the age of 13. He’s been called the last of the original Mississippi Delta guitarists. By 1947 at age 15, Bud could play well enough to perform publicly and garnered the blessing of many elder guitar players. He was offered an audition by BB King but couldn’t afford the trip to Memphis. So he continued to play locally and for friends and family for decades, while working other jobs, including 35 years as a logger. Years after retiring from that, he was finally “discovered” by the greater blues world in 2013 at the age of 81, releasing his first album and beginning to appear nationally and even internationally. We’re honored to have him come to Boise and our 25th Festival.

Studebaker John Headlines Blues on the Banks Caldwell Weekend Aug 4-5

Studebaker John and his longtime blues band, The Hawks, headline this year’s 2-night 20th edition of Blues on the Banks in Caldwell, presented by the Boise Blues Society. The Saturday night (Aug 5) show also features Boise area blues bands, Jake Leg, and The Blues Directors. Doors open at 5:30pm, with the show running 6-10pm.

Three fine blues bands, highlighted by the fabulous Studebaker John and The Hawks–and home by 10:30 if you choose! For only 12 bucks advance (no fees or tax added), at a beautiful creekside venue–this is a deal way too good to pass up!! Studebaker John himself is a great blues talent and wonderful showman, as those who have seen him live will attest–his live shows definitely surpass his impressive web videos.

This year will also feature a special Friday night Kickoff Party–Blues Jam with a live band yet to be named. That’s on Friday, August 4, 7-10pm; $5 cover at door or free with purchase of a Saturday ticket ($12 advance).

Studebaker John is among those who were fortunate to learn the Blues trade from the Chicago legends the rest of us read about.  A talented slide guitar and blues harp player, emotive singer and songwriter, and compelling live performer, John brought down the house at a show last fall in Boise. This time he brings his full band, The Hawks, with him. See at video of his last show here at https://youtu.be/neZu8W8fXa0

“Not too many living Bluesmen can say they saw or played with or knew the legends of Chicago Blues. John mentions Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Big Walter, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Albert King, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and many others in casual conversation. He’s not being pretentious; he was merely in the right place at the right time in his life.” (Blues Blast Magazine)

In addition to his own recordings, Studebaker John has made countless appearances as a sideman on recordings of other artists, including a stint with members of the British rock bands, Pretty Things and Yardbirds. His music has also been featured in numerous movies and TV shows. This band will surely get you moving, whether it’s on our feet on the spacious lawn or in your seat!

Fabulous Ben Rice Blues Band Returns To Boise

Have you heard yet that the fabulous Ben Rice is bringing his band here on June 9? Still just 27, Ben (from Portland) is on his way to the top echelon of blues guitarists/vocalists. After standout performances at the 2015 Boise Blues Festival and 2016 Blues and Bones, and a sold-out show of his own in Fall of 2015, we’re excited to bring Ben back to Boise!!

Ben has been leaving huge impressions on audiences around the Northwest and winning awards for his vocals and guitar playing for the last seven years. In 2014 at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee he left the audience speechless with a raw emotional delivery of his version of “Key To The Highway.” His second consecutive trip to the International Blues Challenge he made the finals in the solo/duo category. Where he was awarded the St. Blues Guitarist award for best guitarist.

Ben Rice’s music is deeply rooted in traditional blues, yet at the same time fiercely original. His guitar playing earns labels like “fearless,” “inventive” and “powerful,” and he routinly brings audiences to their feet with his stunning and emotionally honest vocal delivery. Ben is as much at home fronting his electric band as he is captivating a crowd solo with nothing but his voice and his acoustic resonator guitar.
