Scholarship supports talented young musicians in the Boise area.
The Boise Blues Society and the Idaho Jazz Society are pleased to announce a benefit concert, “Blues for Philly G” to be held from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Oak Barrel of Eagle, 1065 E. Winding Creek, Eagle, Idaho.
The concert will raise funds for a youth scholarship set up in honor of local musician and music educator, Phil Garonzik. The Philip B. Music Memorial Scholarship provides annual scholarships for private music instruction for promising junior, middle and high school age instrumental musicians in the Boise area.
This scholarship honors the musical legacy of saxophonist, Phil Garonzik and his commitment to jazz, blues, and quality music education. The Philip B. Garonzik Memorial Music Scholarship fund is managed by the Idaho Jazz Society, a local charitable 501(c)3 corporation. The event is co-sponsored by the Boise Blues Society.
“Blues for Philly G” also recognizes Phil Garonzik’s involvement in the Boise blues community. Phil was a founding owner of The Blues Bouquet, a popular Boise blues night club in the 90s, where he also performed with house band, The Hoochie Coochie Men. In recent years, prior to his death in 2016 to a rare form of cancer, Phil focused on playing jazz, teaching woodwinds to area students and adults, as well as participating in the Boise Blues Society “Blues in the Schools” (BITS) project.
Performers at the event include the Hoochie Coochie Men, Smooth Avenue, and duo Danny Beal and Katie G. The event will also feature SNAPFU, a group of talented young blues musicians led by bassist Kevin Littrell. JT Tyler of Smooth Avenue will emcee the event. Tickets are $10 at the door.
