The 2016 Boise Blues Festival is going to be bigger than ever, as the Boise Blues Society takes it to the next level! Hard-touring guitar slinger ANA POPOVIC will headline the event, to be held this year at the beautiful Idaho Botanical Garden on Sunday July 17. The entire Garden will be open for your enjoyment during the event, which will be held in the evening, 5-10pm. Gates at 4pm.
Becoming an irresistible force in the world of contemporary blues music, Popovic blends smoking electric funk and slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals and a tight blues groove with soulful, feminine vocals. She is a 5-time Blues Music Award nominee, including best new artist, best contemporary blues female artist (twice) and best contemporary blues album. She and her powerful band are tirelessly touring, on the road this summer in support of her new 3 CD release, Trilogy, which will be on sale at the festival. She played a sold-out Boise show at the Sapphire Room last summer.
This is an all-ages show. No outside alcohol or glass. There will be excellent Food Truck options and beer, wine and other beverages available! Please support our vendors who help make this festival possible. This event is presented with promotional and volunteer assistance from The Idaho Foodbank. A portion of every ticket sold goes to the Foodbank to help in their mission to alleviate hunger in our community. Boise Blues Society is sponsored in part by AmeriBen/IEC Group, Jo’s Traveling Bar, and the Riverside Hotel.
Popovic, born in Serbia and now based in Memphis, is the only female guitar player added to the 2014-16 all-star Experience Hendrix lineup; a nationwide tour celebrating the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. She also plays numerous major blues, jazz and rock festivals, and has shared headlining stages with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clark Jr., Jonny Lang and many others.

The festival will also feature the Nashville soulful blues group, the Andy T-Nick Nixon Band, fronted by guitarist Andy T and vocalist Nick Nixon. Andy T’s jazz-tinged guitar style is influenced by T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Magic Sam, and Albert Collins among others, yet remains his own. Note: Nick Nixon has had to cancel due to illness and has been replaced on this tour by renowned harmonica player and vocalist RJ Mischo. Please read separate post and see video here about him. His skills are sure to dazzle you at the festival.
The festival lineup will also include Smooth Avenue Band, a 6-piece ensemble fronted by vocalist JT. Smooth Avenue does a variety of blues and soul with leanings towards funk blues and soulful blues ballads.
The lineup is rounded out by the BBS Scholars & Friends band, a pair of scholarship winners from its Blues in the Schools program invited to open the show, joined by several friends/collaborators. Come out and support Kevin Littrell, who adds jazz infused music into his blues guitar playing, and recent scholarship winner guitarist Thomas Wilson, as BBS continues in its mission to support the young blues musicians in our area.
